Har Shalom Temple Youth (known simply as HSTY) is the Temple’s largest and most extensive piece of Youth Programming. Comprised of students from grades 9 -12, HSTY’s social programming includes a variety of events and trips. Tikkun Olam plays a very large role in connecting students to the larger community with most events throughout the year containing a social action component, including HSTY’s annual participation in the Midnight Run to New York City. The members also serve as leaders in the immediate community, helping to staff and run many events at the Temple.

HSTY also strives to provide a breeding ground for one-of-a-kind leadership experience and as such is governed by an annually peer-elected Executive Board. Members of the “E-Board” are responsible for the all aspects of the organization as well as the planning, publicity, communication and implementation of all HSTY events. Whether an officer of the organization or simply a committed member, all students get first-hand experience in belonging to an autonomous organization run-by and geared-to their visions.

HSTY is also a very proud member of the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), the Union for Reform Judaism’s youth arm. As an active element both nationally and regionally (as a member of the Garden Empire Region or GER), HSTY members are encouraged to participate in the multiple NFTY-GER events per year, most of which consist of weekend-long kallot (think retreat, meets a sleepover, meets camp, meets youth group event). NFTY and NFTY-GER provide unbelievably fun experiences, networking with other Reform Jewish teens from around the tri-state region, and unparalleled leadership opportunities on large-scale levels (students are encouraged to run for both regional and national NFTY Executive Board positions).
